Vintage Home in a Vintage Neighborhood

In the 1920s, the Yaquina John Point was sliced and diced into a neighborhood of small residental lots. Our home was built on a small looped lane, Waziyata Way. Our neighbors across the street have oceanfront property, but we have a view and beach access through a wide gap between houses.

The point was named after Yaquina John, a chief or councillor of the indigenous Yaquina people. Today, the small area’s best-known spot might be the Cliff House Bed and Breakfast, our neighbor to the south. It occupies the tip of the point — a prime location to be sure.

Little has changed in our house over the years except some essential bathroom and kitchen updates, and more roof repairs than we’d care to remember. It retains a vintage and somewhat rustic quality that appeals to many people, particularly those seeking an “unplugged” getaway without television or wifi.

Why We Love Alsea Cottage

Four generations of our family have enjoyed the Alsea Cottage in Waldport, Oregon. Lately, though, we’re not using it as often as we once did. We’re offering it now as a vacation rental home in the belief that you’ll like spending time there as much as we do. With that in mind, I offer five reasons I love to go to the Alsea Cottage.

Best walking beach in Oregon. You can wander for miles, mostly having the vast expanse to yourselves. I never tire of the changing tides, the sound of the waves and the seals that pop their heads up in the surf, disappear and resurface, again and again.
Relaxation. Time seems to pause for me at the coast. We have no must-do’s, no TV, no wifi, no constant need to check email etc. Life is leisurely.
Evenings by the hearth with a crackling fire. Often we turn out all the lights and let the fire’s glow fill the room.
Family time. Everyone hangs out in the front room. One person may be lounging with a mug of tea while another couple are playing cards at the dining table, and yet another family member is reading in the rocking chair.
Day trip to Newport. Just a 30-minute drive up Highway 101, the city has lots to see and do, from a working harbor to the aquarium where Free Willy once lived. My favorite destination is a combination restaurant-bookstore called Canyon Way. I agree completely with a Google reviewer who wrote: “Packed full of charm and ambiance. One of those places where you expect to find a secret door that opens to reveal a never-never land. The food is excellent! I can’t say enough how enjoyable it is to go there, and have a fine meal and drinks, and then spend time wandering through the book store…. A trip to Newport would not be the same with out a stop here.”

Little has changed over the years in the lovely front room in the Alsea Cottage vacation home in Waldport, Oregon. Two big picture windows afford blue-water views of the Pacific. As the story goes, the paneling is crafted from timber that floated down the Alsea River in the early 1920s.
